St. Marys wrestlers competed in two tournaments over the last two weekends and made quite an impression in both competitions.
In London on Saturday, Jan. 9, Wrestling Club members competed in the largest tournament of the season. Over 450 wrestlers were in attendance at A. B. Lucas Secondary School.
Of the 11 St. Marys wrestlers who showed up at London, seven finished in the top four of their respective divisions. Joe Smith, Tyler Roth and Laura Barr led the way with silver medals; each winning three matches before losing close ones in the finals.
Rookie wrestler Keagan Fergusson also won three and lost one, but had to settle for the third-place bronze medal. Dylan Tucker won five matches, but lost in the consolation final to capture fourth place.
Newcomers Justin Webb and Tyler Lajoie also had good tournaments. Webb won three and grabbed fourth place in the Novice Division, and Lajoie won two to capture fourth in the Open Boys Division.
Barr, Fergusson capture gold
In Sarnia on Saturday, Jan. 16, 440 wrestlers converged on St. Clair high school to compete in this day-long tournament.
St. Marys grapplers placed six out of nine wrestlers in the top four spots.
Two girls, Laura Barr and Amber Fergusson, led the way by capturing first-place gold medals. Both won two matches and defeated their opponents 2–0.
Grade 9 St. Marys DCVI student Evan Sauvé advanced to the final in the 61 Kilo Novice boys grouping. After winning the first round, his opponent came back and pinned him partway through the second round. Sauvé took home the silver medal.
Teammates Joe Smith and Dylan Tucker were both in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament –- 67.5 Kilo Open Boys.
Both won their first three matches to advance to the semi-finals. Both lost and were relegated to the consolation side where they both advanced to the finals.
Smith came out on top to capture the bronze medal and Tucker had to settle for fourth place. Keagan Fergusson rounded out the St. Marys victories by capturing fourth place in the 61 Kilo Boys division.
Overall, in the last two tournaments, St. Marys wrestlers won a whopping total of 39 matches.
