We See — Century Home magazine is looking for stone houses to write about. The many fine homes in the St. Marys area have come to the attention of the magazine thanks to the annual Stonetown Heritage Festival.
St. Marys Memorial Hospital Foundation is considering the development of a health and fitness centre at the hospital.
The 43rd annual convention of the Ontario Association of Women Teachers was held in Sudbury recent. The Stratford branch was represented by two delegation, Jo-Anne Eckert and Nancy Kraemer, as well as Inez Haid, of Hesson, a member of the Provincial Executive.
25 years ago — 1984
The 22nd Brent Family Reunion will be held July 1 at the Kirkton Community Park to observe the 150th anniversary of the Dorchester (England) Assizes, at which six farm labourers were tried for forming a labours trade union and sentences.
Hillhurst Farms, owned by Robert and Marguerite Barnett and May Hill Farms, owned by John and Mary McIntosh, will open their gates to the public as part of the St. Marys bicentennial program. These two farms are among 27 Century Farms in the St. Marys area.
50 years ago — 1959
Another sign that the railways are not being used like they were a few decades ago was the recent removal of the little Uniondale station off its foundation and, with the aid of two tractors, it was hauled to the Slater homestead.
The foundation for the new school in Kintore village is taking shape. This new school, we understand, is a type of the new idea of centralization that has been talked about for several years. This school belongs to the East Nissouri School Area. (Uniondale)
We See — That work on eliminating the dangerous turn on Highway No. 7 at the “Four Mile Bush” east of St. Marys was started recently.
From Town Council — Coun. Stevens told council that the Administration Committee had visited Cadzow Park house and decided that the local Historical Committee be offered room in the house, which was an ideal location for same. It was suggested by Mrs. Edna Fulcher, a member of the Museum Committee, that a tenant also be allowed to live in the house for the purpose of preventing damage and also be a curator for the Museum exhibit.
75 years ago — 1934
The St. Marys Tennis Club now has a set of the finest playing courts in Western Ontario. Scheduled games started recently. What a relief the new courts are after the gravel ones. No more choking dust in dry weather. No more sitting down in the middle on an exciting game to extricate bothersome pebbles from shoes.
Dr. Elizabeth McMaster has arrived home from India on furlough. Dr. McMaster, who is a graduate of the St. Marys Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto, has been engaged in medical missionary work in India upwards of thirty years.
100 years ago — 1909
Our Merchants are Enterprising and Believe in Liberal Use of Printer’s Ink. They talk to their patrons through the Journal. There is no town of its size in the country with finer stones and more varied stacks of goods than the town of St. Marys. The directory lists — Merchants and Businesses that advertise in the Journal:
