Arthur Meighen wins tourney in overtime

The Arthur Meighen team captured the 2010 Junior Mixed Floor hockey tournament last Tuesday at DCVI, defeating Mitchell Public 1-0 in overtime in the championship game. The Arthur Meighen school team captured the 2010 Junior Mixed floor hockey tournament held last Tuesday, Feb. 2 at St. Marys DCVI.
Both gyms were used to accommodate all the 25-minute games.
The Arthur Meighen squad, coached by Candy McEwan, defeated Mitchell Public in the championship game.
In the tightly-contested final, Arthur Meighen and Mitchell traded scoring chances, only to be denied by hot goaltenders who refused to let anything past. Defence was also a key component to this thrilling game, and at the end of regulation time, both teams remained off the score sheet.
Near the end of the second sudden-death overtime, a shot from Arthur Meighen’s Erin Lucas finally made it through, giving them the 1-0 victory and back-to-back Jr. Mixed Floor hockey titles.
The semi-finals were against Bedford Public. It also went to sudden-death OT and there was still no score. Arthur Meighen eventually won it in a shootout. Mitchell played Upper Thames faced off in the other semi-final, with Mitchell winning in OT.
In pool play, Arthur Meighen defeated Anne Hathaway 3-2 and Avon 7-1, tied Downie Central 2-2, and blanked North Easthope 3-0.
Fifteen schools from the East Region of the Avon Maitland District School Board competed in the tournament, convened by Jeremy Brock of South Perth Centennial, chair of the East Region Sports Council.
Schools taking part were: Anne Hathaway, Arthur Meighen, Avon, Bedford, Central Perth, Downie Central, Hamlet, Milverton, Mitchell, Romeo, Shakespeare, Sprucedale, Upper Thames, South Perth Centennial and North Easthope.
“All participating teams were competitive and evenly-matched, and by the end of round-robin play, many were crowded at the top of the standings, requiring tie-breaking measures to determine which of the teams ended up in the four team final rounds,” Brock explained.
“All of the participants of the tournament demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, and coaches remarked that they were impressed with the DCVI student volunteers who acted as officials during the tournament.”
